At your local pet store, you’ll find plenty of kibble options that claim your dog’s potential food is made up of chicken and turkey, or beef and lamb. What’s deceiving is what you don’t see on the label.
If you come across food that’s labeled, “Beef Dog Food,” then, according to the FDA, at least 95% of that food has to be made up of beef. Things get a bit trickier when you have two “primary” ingredients. Let’s say you find a dog food that’s made up of chicken and grass-fed beef. Those two ingredients must make up at least 95% of the ingredients, but the more prominent ingredient will be the one listed first. This means that you may only be getting 2% of that grass-fed beef, and 93% chicken. It doesn’t stop there.
Many dog foods are labeled with vague terms, such as “Chicken Dinner.” If the ingredient listed in the name, such as chicken, makes up a minimum of 25% of the dog food, but less than 95%, the name is required to include a descriptive term, such as “dinner.” Other names include entrée, platter, or formula. You may think that you’re purchasing kibble made up completely of chicken, but if you check the label, you’ll see that chicken is the third or fourth ingredient on the list, meaning your dog’s food is made up mostly of something other than chicken. Let’s say your dog has an intolerance to beef, so you opt for a “lamb formula.” You may actually only be giving your dog 25% lamb and 75% beef, which could be the culprit as to why your dog is having so many digestive issues.
Kibble is typically made up of feed-grade, processed ingredients. Because these ingredients are processed, the majority of the nutrients have nearly dissipated. Many kibble brands contain carcinogens, such as aflatoxins, otherwise known as a type of mold. Aflatoxins are known to cause cancer. Since many kibble brands contain food with grain, it’s easy for this mold to grow. The most common of these grains susceptible to mold-growth are corn, wheat cereals, peanuts, rice, and soybeans.
Many of these grains, which are high in starch, contain a high glycemic index, spiking your dog’s insulin, glucagon, and cortisol, putting them at risk of obesity.
There are many food dyes added to kibble, and, unfortunately, they aren’t what you want in your dog’s food. Food dyes, like Yellow 5 and Blue 2, are known to cause cancer, thyroid tumors, asthma, allergies, and brain tumors. The other food dyes to look out for are Red 40 and Yellow 6, which can also cause cancer, ADHD, skin issues, asthma, and chromosomal damage.
All things considered, kibble isn’t what you want to feed your dogs. The good news: there are brands out there that produce food actually focused on your dog’s health. We’ve put together some alternatives so that you can feed your dog food the most nutritious food on the market.
