Raising Kanan is the only prequel out of the three Power spin-offs. The prequel focuses on the origin story of Kanan Stark, who Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson originally portrayed in Power. Set in the 90s, the show follows a young Kanan (Mekai Curtis) as his mother, Raq (Patina Miller), teaches him the ways of the streets in South Jamaica, Queens. His family is consumed in a turf war with a rival drug-dealer, Unique (Joey Bada$$) and a vengeful cop, Detective Malcolm Howard (Omar Epps). As Kanan struggles to prove his worth and become a man, we get a glimpse of how this high school student grew up to be Ghost’s ruthless arch-enemy in Power.
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s influence on the Power universe goes beyond his acting and producing work. Not only did Jackson first bring Kanan to life on Power, but also, his experiences as a kid in Queens directly inspired the character’s backstory. As Mekai Curtis shared before the first season’s release, he closely studied Jackson’s mannerisms and quirks to honor the rapper’s close ties to this story.
Raising Kanan’s main cast was already stacked with the talents of Omar Epps, Joey Bada$$, and Patina Miller anchoring the show. Even the younger actors, like Mekai Curtis, show off their acting chops. The performances are sure to only get better with the announced cast additions. Krystal Joy Brown (Hamilton) joins the cast as the anger management counselor for one of Kanan’s uncles, Marvin (London Brown). The casting of Grammy award-winning LeToya Luckett (Greenleaf) also relates to Marvin as she will portray his ex-wife. Paulina Singer will play Zisa, an aspiring musician who collaborates with Kanan’s other uncle, Lou Lou (Malcolm Mays). The final new face is Omar Dorsey (Queen Sugar), who will portray Cartier ‘Duns’ Fareed, a wiley businessman.
Lucky for you, the STARZ app is currently available for $5/month for 3 months! You can enjoy all four shows in the Power Universe whenever and wherever you want! With an opportunity this amazing, we want you to jump on the STARZ app now before the summer ends.
