1. P-Valley is based on a play.
As the series creator and executive producer of P-Valley, Katori Hall adapted the show from her play P*ssy Valley (2015). You may recognize her name because she also wrote the Tony-nominated jukebox musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (2019). Hall, like her characters, is an African-American woman from the South, and in her words, she wrote the play as “a bridge of empathy and understanding for women who haven’t had that opportunity to be seen as the full [human] beings that they are.” True to her word, P-Valley’s main plot follows the lives of several women in the adult entertainment industry: the ambitious Mercedes Woodbine (Brandee Evans), the resilient Keyshawn (Shannon Thornton), and the newcomer Autumn Night (Elarica Johnson).
2. The show’s choreography and music are unforgettable.
The showrunners of P-Valley invested a lot of effort into recreating the vibes of a real club. For example, Jamaica Craft, the choreographer, led the cast through a pole-dancing workshop to master the art and sport of dance. No wonder their moves are so clean! As far as music, the music supervisors Stephanie Diaz-Matos and Sarah Bromberg selected as many female artists as possible, and Jucee Froot performs the show’s theme song, “Down in the Valley.” You can check out the official playlist for yourself on Spotify!
3. The 1st season won an NAACP Image Award.
As it turns out, we’re not the only ones in love with P-Valley! The first season was nominated for 14 awards and won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Guest Actor or Actress in a Television Series for Lorretta Devine’s performance as Ernestine, the former owner of The Pynk. Overall, critics and viewers alike have praised P-Valley for its thoughtful exploration of social issues and depictions of the African American and LGBTQ+ community. We love effortless representation!
