Everybody could use a little bit of escapism every now and again, right? A TV show that transports you to another time and place, allows you to imagine yourself living out your fantasies (or live vicariously through that of others’), and sparks some curiosity; imagination; creativity… perhaps even a little bit of lust.
The STARZ App’s new 6-part TV series Little Birds does exactly that. This show is not for the faint of heart – or the underaged! Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about Little Birds, starring Juno Temple, Yumna Marwan, and Hugh Kinner.
Little Birds is a book that was written by Anaïs Nin in the early 1940s and published in 1979 two years after her death. It is her second published work of erotica that explores a wide variety of sexual topics, including the objectification of the male gaze, masochism, and the pornographic genre, in general.
The main character, Lucy, is an American debutante who feel trapped in a societal cage. She finds herself in Tangier after marrying a man that she feels she doesn’t know at all. The series is about her search for an unconventional life – one that is completely different from what she is used to.
STARZ’ Little Birds is full of color from the lighting to the costumes to the show’s setting. There are many ways this use of color can be read, but we took it as passionate, playful, and even mysterious, at times.
Ballgowns, lingerie, bright and colorful dresses, proper ‘50s-style clothing, full body paint, oh my! The costume design in Little Birds is kind of reminiscent of Laz Buhrmann’s Moulin Rouge, if it was set in Tangier in 1955 instead of France in the early 1900s. It’s exudes self-expression, sexiness, and beauty.
English academic Andrew Hussey called Tangier in the 1950s a “utopia of dangerous, unknown pleasures.” The general attitude in Morocco was more relaxed and freer than that of America, especially when it came to homosexuality. Many people who traveled to Tangier during that time were trying to escape a repressive society that did not allow them to love whom they loved.
Sound intriguing? Little Birds premieres on the STARZ App on Sunday, June 6th at Midnight EST.
You can get the App for only $25 for 6 months – don’t miss out on the opportunity to see this sensual story come to life!
